Chiropractic

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions involving the muscles, joints, bones and nerves of the body. This is known as  the musculoskeletal system.

It is a regulated healthcare profession and not a specific treatment. Chiropractors are best known for manipulation but they do so much more.

How can Chiropractic treatment help me?

Chiropractors are well known for treating back and neck pain, however, as muskoloskeletal experts, they also treat a wide array of other problems, including

  • Headaches arising from the neck.
  • Sciatica
  • Knee and hip pain
  • Ankle pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Elbow pain

What techniques does a Chiropractor use?

At Prime Therapy Clinic we use many different techniques and approaches to treat our patients. Including manipulation, mobilisation and soft tissue/muscle techniques. Our Chiropractor is trained in western medical acupuncture and he may use this as part of your treatment. Exercise prescriptions and psychosocial interventions are in integral part of treatment. Advice, information, and education also play a vital role in how we treat our patients. We are passionate about giving our patients the tools they need to be able to help themselves.

You can read more about the different techniques our Chiropractor uses by looking at the techniques page of our website

What happens during a first Chiropractic appointment?

The Chiropractor will need to know some details about you, including your medical history, any tests or treatments you have previously had and any medications you are taking. We make sure we have plenty of time available in our initial consultations as its important that we know not only the symptoms you are experiencing, but how these are affecting you.

You will be examined and a range of tests will be carried out to help make a diagnosis. During your examination and treatment it may be necessary for you to remove an item of clothing, but don’t worry, we have gowns and shorts available and a private changing room. Our Chiropractor will explain their findings to you and discuss with you how treatment could help you. With your consent a treatment will be carried out.

If, after the examination and tests the chiropractor believes you require further tests such as an MRI they can contact your GP (with consent) or assist you in arranging a private referral.

Are Chiropractors regulated?

In the UK, Chiropractic is a registered profession, all Chiropractors must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council in order to practice. Only those that have completed an accredited University degree can register as a Chiropractor.

In the past Chiropractic used to be considered an alternative form of treatment. However, the approach used by Chiropractors for the treatment of conditions such as back pain has shown to be very effective. Manipulation being delivered by Chiropractors is now included in the NICE guidelines. GPs often refer to Chiropractors for musculoskeletal issues such as back pain and neck pain.
