Conditions

Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition that causes pain, swelling, and stiffness in a joint or joints, affecting around 10 million people in the UK. Arthritis isn’t a single condition; there are many different types. The vast majority of arthritis cases are Osteoarthritis, a degenerative process affecting the cartilage, bone, and surrounding tissues of a joint, primarily affecting people over the age of 45. This is the most common type we see here at the clinic. Other types include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, and Axial Spondyloarthritis, which are autoimmune inflammatory conditions.

Causes

Osteoarthritis starts with the roughening of the cartilage, which sets in motion a series of processes by the body. This can include the formation of extra bone, an increase in the amount of thick fluid in the joint, and changes in the shape of the joint due to the stretching of the joint capsule. The main cause of osteoarthritis is aging, but other factors such as injury or being overweight can influence how quickly this process happens.

In autoimmune inflammatory types of arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks the cartilage in the joints, which is why it can occur at any age. However, as we get older, autoimmune conditions can coexist with osteoarthritis.

We are dedicated to supporting you in managing your arthritis, providing ongoing advice, support, and adjustments to your treatment plan as needed to ensure the best possible outcomes.
