Conditions
Fibromyalgia and Persistent Pain
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterised by widespread pain, fatigue, and a variety of other symptoms. It can significantly impact daily life and overall well-being and is something we help with regularly here at the clinic. Understanding and managing fibromyalgia pain is essential for improving quality of life.
Causes
The exact cause of fibromyalgia is not well understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of physical, genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. People with fibromyalgia often have physical changes in their body resulting in a heightened sensitivity to pain, known as central sensitisation, which means their nervous system amplifies pain signals. Common triggers and contributing factors include:
- Genetic Predisposition: Family history of fibromyalgia or other chronic pain conditions.
- Infections: Previous illnesses or infections can sometimes trigger or exacerbate fibromyalgia symptoms.
- Physical or Emotional Trauma: Events such as car accidents, surgeries, or significant emotional stress can initiate fibromyalgia.
- Stress and Anxiety: High levels of stress and anxiety can worsen fibromyalgia symptoms.
- Sleep Disorders: Poor sleep quality and sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, are common in individuals with fibromyalgia.
Symptoms of fibromyalgia can vary widely but often include:
- Widespread musculoskeletal pain
- Fatigue and tiredness
- Sleep disturbances
- Cognitive difficulties, often referred to as "fibro fog"
- Headaches and migraines
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Education and Self-Management Strategies: Providing you with information about fibromyalgia and teaching techniques to manage symptoms effectively, including pacing techniques, stress management and sleep hygiene.
- Acupuncture/Dry Needling: These techniques may be used to reduce pain, improve sleep, and enhance overall well-being.
- Lifestyle Modifications: Addressing lifestyle factors that may contribute to fibromyalgia symptoms, such as diet, stress, and activity levels.
- Psychological approaches: Techniques such as Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Mindfulness to help manage the psychological aspects of fibromyalgia, such as anxiety and depression.
We are committed to supporting you throughout your journey with fibromyalgia, providing ongoing advice, support, and adjustments to your treatment plan as needed to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Sorted my 15 year back issue out after the first session and I’ve been going ever since. If you’ve ever thought about going then you need to.. I put it off for two years and I’m gutted I didn’t go sooner. The staff are very friendly and always remember little details from conversations from previous sessions. Then my husband discovered Prime Therapy Chiropractic Clinic in Grantham. I booked a course of five shockwave therapy treatments and within a few short weeks I started to feel the difference. Mark Jessop is a first-rate therapist, he’s a joy to deal with and really knows his stuff. What’s more his services are also very reasonably priced. At last I’m looking forward to a brighter future - thank you so much Mark.Christine Cragg2023-04-03Mark is an excellent therapist. I had suffered with Plantar Fasciitis for months and nothing I tried had helped. After having the shock wave treatment I have been pain free and that is since Aug 22. So happy.Rachel Broughton2022-12-21I have recently had ESWT at Prime Therapy, I was advised by an NHS consultant that this could help the insertional achilles tendinitis and haglunds deformity, however it not available in that NHS trust. I contacted Prime Therapy Chiropractic clinic to make an appointment to discuss the treatment. Mark offered no false promises when discussing the ESWT and how it works. After 5 sessions with Mark I am able to walk properly again and I am virtually pain free. I couldn't have wished for a better outcome!! I found the whole experience from booking an appointment to the treatment extremely easy and professional. I did feel very apprehensive when I first arrived but Mark was very friendly and knowledgeable. I would recommend anyone with this issue or something similar to contact Prime Therapy!!Google rating score: 4.9 of 5, based on 52 reviews
